How to register for sales tax in New Jersey

Register via NJ division of revenue
In the portal, complete the registration and be sure to select “Sales and Use Tax.”
Receive your Tax ID and PIN
After approval, you’ll receive your New Jersey Tax ID and PIN/access code for future filings.
New Jersey sales tax filing due dates
Stay compliant with these filing deadlines. Your specific frequency is assigned by the Division of Taxation based on your tax liability.
- Monthly Remittance (ST-51): Due by the 20th of the following month (for businesses with >$30,000 prior year liability).
- Quarterly Filing (ST-50): Due April 20, July 20, October 20, and January 20 (standard for most businesses).
- Annual Filing: Due January 20 of the following year (for very low-volume businesses).
Important note:
Larger sellers file quarterly returns (ST-50) but must make monthly payments (ST-51) for the first two months of each quarter.
