Missing UTRs
Protecting your UTR number is crucial. Here’s what to do if you’ve lost your UTR number.
What to do if you have lost your UTR number
If you’ve lost your UTR number, check to see if you have any letters from HMRC regarding your tax. Some of the communications you receive from HMRC will have your UTR number printed on them. As we explored in an earlier chapter, your UTR number stays the same throughout your self-employment, so you’ll be able to find it on past returns and some letters from HMRC.
If you have a government gateway account, sign in to it and navigate to the personal tax account section. Your UTR number will be at the top of the page.
If you can’t find any letters from HMRC with your UTR number and don’t have a government gateway account, call HMRC’s self-assessment helpline.
