Humans Being: The psychology and neuroscience of influence
Speaker: Nigel Latta, Clinical Psychologist and Author
Your brain is the most astounding thing you will ever possess, and odds are you take it completely for granted. This small tofu-like blob floats in a box in the dark and—unless something has gone terribly wrong—has no direct contact with the world, save for some pipes bringing stuff in and pipes sending stuff back out. While we could spend years waxing lyrical about the wonders of the human brain, in this session Nigel will focus on the wonder of connection, and specifically will talk about an ancient and very simple principle which makes the exercise of connecting with other brains and influencing them in meaningful ways much more likely. If you’ve ever struggled to manage difficult clients, colleagues, or even your own kids, then this keynote will reveal a surprisingly simple trick which dates back some 3.7 million years as Nigel explains how to influence stone age brains in smart phone times.

For the sake of your family, your friends and the planet - learn to love your stuff!
Speaker: Dr. Richard Denniss, Chief Economist and former Executive Director of The Australia Institute
Everything you have heard about materialism is wrong. If you want to spend more time with your family, live in a healthier and happier community, or protect our planet’s natural environment you need to learn to love our things more. We need to be more materialistic. While the words consumerism and materialism are often used interchangeably, they actually mean the exact opposite. Consumerism is the love of buying things, where materialism is the love of the things themselves. If you love something, truly loved it, the thought of throwing it in the bin and buying it’s replacement would cause you pain not pleasure. If a rapidly growing population is to share the one habitable planet we have found we need to learn to love our things again. We need to cherish them, maintain them, repair them and find new homes for them when we no longer need them. And if we reshape our spending patterns we can reshape our entire economy.
