Develop your skills over summer

With the Xero internship program, you’ll spend the summer learning new skills and experiencing what life is like in a bustling tech company. By the end of the internship, you’ll hopefully have a good idea of where you want your career to go.

The Xero intern program is for students in their penultimate year of study. For students in their final year, check out the roles we’ve got available in our graduate program.

During the internship, you'll:

  • start with a close-knit group of interns, giving you instant connections around the business
  • be hooked up with a buddy
  • work closely with your manager to plan your experience
  • be placed in a team that's aligned to the area you applied for
  • be involved in our daily work
  • have the opportunity to make real meaningful contributions
  • develop your technical skills and your soft skills
  • gain valuable experience

Our paid internships run over the summer for three months from November 2024 - February 2025

Applications for our 2024/25 intern program open 18 March and close on 12 April 2024.

Engineering interns

Our engineering interns are involved in everything from designing, discovering, developing and testing solutions. Engineering interns work in our product teams to develop the core Xero product, and in our technology teams writing software to support the Xero product behind the scenes. Our teams are made up of full-stack engineers, front-end and back-end specialists, and quality engineers. You’ll work with technologies like AWS, C#, React, Swift, and SQL.

As an intern engineer you’ll have the opportunity to work in one of our Xero teams, innovating new features, fixing bugs and enhancing functionality.

Our previous interns have been involved with:

  • working in a fast-paced environment that applies the agile methodology of software development, with frequent releases and continuous planning and improvement
  • writing code for new features or bug fixes, to be deployed to a production environment
  • learning about architectural concerns within a large enterprise stack

The internship was cool because we had a whole week of workshops before we started doing anything. It was like being at uni but with more focused, hands-on collaborative learning in a small group.

When internships run

Our paid internships run over the summer for three months from November 2024 to February 2025

What an internship looks like

These are paid internships where you’ll join a team and do real work alongside other Xero employees. Unlike technical roles in the grad program, internships don’t rotate. Instead, you’ll stay with one team for the duration of your internship.

Why do an internship with Xero

You’ll learn heaps and meet some awesome people. It could also be a great way to start your career at Xero. A lot of interns end up joining the Xero grad program once they’ve finished studying.

To be eligible for the internship, you need to be in your penultimate year of study. This enables you to complete your internship with Xero and then, potentially, receive an offer to join the grad program for the following year.

You’ll be invited to complete a technical assessment which, for roles in the technical program will be a HackerRank test as it helps us understand what level and range of skills you currently have. You can practise it beforehand. For the design program, there’s a multiple-choice skills test to help us understand your level of technical knowledge
