Choose your own career adventure with Xero

Xero

Aug 29, 2021

Are you a data scientist who lives for the lunchtime surf? A woodland wanderer looking to do great product design while living deep among the trees? An engineer who’s passionate about being home for dinner with the kids?

At Xero, we’re calling all humans who want to choose their own career adventure. If you’re looking for a role that not only embraces, but encourages you to work in a way that suits your lifestyle and location, we invite you to do your best work of your life with us.

Flexible working reimagined

Today, we’re unveiling our reimagined flexible work policy, to give people in our product and tech teams the opportunity to work where they perform best – at home, in the office, or a combination of both.

We’ve always supported our 3,600+ employees with a diverse and inclusive culture, a flexible work environment and exciting professional development opportunities and yet the COVID-19 pandemic has given us an opportunity to rethink the way we attract the best product and tech talent around the world.

Our new permanent remote roles means you don’t need to turn up to the office to make life better for small businesses, their advisors and communities around the world. You can still have a thriving career in a fast-growing global tech company, while working in a way that suits you.

If you prefer to work from the office full-time, or enjoy a combination of working from home and the office, that’s fine too. We want to give everyone in our product and tech teams genuine flexibility that suits their lifestyle, location and career goals.

Working remotely at Xero

Our reimagined flexible work policy is being rolled out in a phased approach, starting with product and tech teams across Australia, New Zealand, UK and established provinces in Canada (Alberta, Ontario and British Columbia). The US will be added to this list very soon.

This means you can become a permanent remote employee if:

  • you apply for a product or tech role in any of those regions
  • you don’t need to support Xeros in the office (such as IT support)
  • you have a minimum three-hour time zone overlap with your team

That’s it! Living remotely isn’t a prerequisite either. You may live in a city without a Xero office, or prefer to work from home because of your shared parenting responsibilities, quirky hobbies or the sad puppy dog eyes your dog gives you when you leave. That’s absolutely fine.

We’ll help you cover the cost of setting up your home office, as well as travel and accommodation to visit a relevant Xero office up to four times a year. Plus you’ll enjoy all the benefits of joining Xero, like inclusive parental leave, wellbeing leave, extra holidays, Xero shares and more.

Putting our people first

One of things we’re most proud of at Xero is our #human culture of kindness and respect. It’s a culture that we’ve honed over many years of listening, learning and doing, and one that we know can be replicated in a remote setting.

Our experience shows that we get the best out of people when we empower them to work how they like and choose their own career adventure. So we’ve put a lot of effort and research into making sure our redesigned policy supports every type of worker across our product and tech teams.

We’ve invested in resources like ‘Time Zone Mastery’ guidelines to help global teams collaborate more effectively, as well as inclusive leadership training to combat things like proximity bias and isolation. We’ll continue to build on these tools, to make sure you feel connected every step of the way.

Ready to join the team?

No matter where you live or how many hats you wear in your day-to-day life, we want to help you find a balance that allows you to bring your best self to every one of those roles. So if you’re interested in joining the engineering team at Xero, or any of our permanent remote roles, apply today!
