Glitz, champagne and smiles: congratulations to our 2019 NZ Xero Award winners!

Last night we bought the Xero Awards back to New Zealand for the first time in six years and what an event it was. Held at The Opera House in Wellington, it was an opportunity to celebrate the role our accountants, bookkeepers and app partners play in helping Kiwi small businesses thrive.

There were eight categories including a new one – NZ People’s Choice Award where all the nominations came from small businesses themselves. We received an overwhelming number of nominations including a record number of partner award submissions and more than 850 People’s Choice submissions.

Our external judges – Peter Vial, Phil Veal, Andrew Hamilton and Vic Crone – were very gracious in giving up their time. All of them mentioned how impressed they were with the calibre of submissions. One comment that struck me most was about how easy it was to see the passion and commitment in each of the submissions and how client relationships and the human connection was paramount.

David Bell, Director Business Growth, at Xero in New Zealand believes the awards highlighted the strength and talent within the industry.

“As someone relatively new to Xero, it’s inspiring to be here celebrating the great work our partners do. Like the judges I think it’s clear that there these winners love what they do and are genuinely committed to helping small businesses thrive. It’s a pleasure to be a part of a community where the values and focus is so aligned.”

Without further ado, below are the winners of the 2019 Xero New Zealand Awards. Congratulations to you all!

Small Accounting Partner of the Year

Generate Accounting

Generate Accounting stood out because they practice what they preach – not just advising clients on apps but using many of them to enhance the productivity and innovation within their own practice. They are also 100 percent paperless which was a key strategic sustainability goal for the firm.

Large Accounting Partner of the Year

Malloch McClean

The team here has transformed a traditional firm running legacy processes and systems into one with a more modern approach. The evolution they have gone through and the cultural change in particular made them stand out in our books.

National Partner of the Year

BDO NZ

BDO has been on a journey, so while this award celebrates some amazing initiatives in the last 12 months and some true innovation around how they support their clients, it really is a celebration of the journey this company has been on in the last decade.

Advisory Partner of the Year

Convex Accounting

One of the things that impressed us the most about Convex was their accurate use of compliance information to base their advisory services on. It’s great to see our partners merging both compliance and advisory to achieve success.

App Partner of the Year

GoCardless

GoCardless is relentless in their pursuit of excellence. Their entrance into the NZ market, subsequent growth and intention to better support business has had a huge impact already and their ability to turn up and help businesses get paid on time and faster, is so powerful.

Bookkeeping Partner of the Year

Bookkeepers NZ

Having only started their journey with us late last year, we are excited to see Bookkeepers NZ take out this title. A logo of a pair of gumboots alongside a pair of red stiletto heels demonstrates their heavy commitment in both agri and small business finance. The team has also embraced the ecosystem and are innovative in the way they communicate to clients – we look forward to following their continued growth and development.

Emerging App Partner of the Year

Cradle

Cradle is doing some really groundbreaking, innovative work – allowing businesses and teams to work together and serve clients more effectively than they have in the past. We don’t have anyone in this category at the moment and the team is using Xero to integrate in a deeper way and we know we still have more to see from them.

Business Transformation Award

Oxygen Advisors

We had to introduce another category to recognise the excellent work that Oxygen Advisors is doing in New Zealand. They’ve not only worked on but in their clients’ businesses to help their clients achieve significant success.

Known as a team of passionate and highly-skilled virtual CFOs, Oxygen Advisors provides a tailored approach specifically catered for high-growth companies including Woop, Once It and Wipster.

People’s Choice Award

Maisey Harris & Co

The team at Masiey Harris should be incredibly proud of themselves. Here are just a few of the things that were said about them: they think outside the box, offer high levels of support, have an impact while providing excellent service. They are empathetic, forward looking and an active member of the community, supporting those around them. A wonderful group of people and well deserving of this years People’s Choice Award.

Thanks Xero for an amazing evening. It was really inspiring to be surrounded by the top echelon of accountancy firms in New Zealand. To come away for a win means everything for the team here at Generate Accounting. We are rapt. Congratulations on a superb evening. The venue was a standout.
