When I speak to accounting and bookkeeping partners across our Xero community, I am hard-pressed to find advisors who advocate the benefits of desktop accounting for a modern small business.

And rightly so. Operating on desktop software means saying goodbye to the single ledger and to the ability to collaborate across one data set. It removes the connectivity required for any type of end-to-end digital data journey that invites efficiency and accuracy into everyday business.

In Xero’s State of Payroll report, three in four (76%) of businesses surveyed said digitising payroll had freed up time and mental space for them to work on their business rather than in it, while three quarters (77%) reported that it had reduced payroll errors.

As the way businesses interact with government becomes increasingly digital, the importance of cloud accounting exceeds efficiency alone. Cloud solutions provide the means for customers to seamlessly and consistently comply with all necessary changes in legislation such as Single Touch Payroll, the digital payroll initiative which will soon be required of all Australian employers.

In spite of all this, many small business owners remain resistant to change.

Xero research highlights how many Australian small businesses still take a manual approach to back-end accounting and payroll processes, with one in three employers providing payment summaries (previously called group certificates) to their employees via mail or fax.
