We were delighted to hear that our 2018 App Partner of the year, Deputy, just raised US$81 million in one of Australia’s largest venture-capital infusions ever. The Sydney-based startup has attracted the interest of Silicon Valley-based IVP, which also has investments in Twitter, Slack and Dropbox. IVP’s commitment speaks to the power of the employer rostering and scheduling app, which integrates seamlessly with Xero.
I’ve been following Deputy’s story for years. It’s grown from a small office near Sydney’s airport with less than 10 employees to more than 150 workers today in the Sydney CBD, as well as offices in the U.S. and U.K. Co-founder and CEO Ashik Ahmed’s vision has been to build an amazing customer experience, and the approach is paying dividends. Deputy’s customer reviews say it all, such as this one:
“I absolutely LOVE Deputy. Its integration with Xero has made my life so much easier with payroll and timesheets, plus my staff clock in and out so I know who is on the premises at what time. We love Deputy’s news feed, and it has boosted our communication as a team. My favourite part is the schedule. Rostering for a child care centre takes hours and this schedule has taken the time down to about 20 minutes.”

I visited Deputy’s new Sydney digs earlier this week, and the office was a hive of activity: No time for office fit-outs yet, empty seats filling up with new headcount, fulfilling the same mission they’ve always had. And the office was abuzz, perhaps with the news of the funding that would be announced later in the week.
The beauty of Deputy is the app’s ability to scale up with a business as it grows. Not only does it serve small businesses across Australia and the U.S., it handles rostering needs at Amazon.com, Qantas, Nike and McDonald’s.
On behalf of Xero, we’d like to offer hearty congratulations to Ashik, Global President Steve Power, Chairman and co-founder Steve Shelley, Global Strategic Partnership Head Darren Clarke, COO Craig Harris, Head of Growth Francois Bondiguel and the entire Deputy team on this milestone – an overnight success 10 years in the making.
