Our annual global hackathon, Xplore, wrapped up in our San Francisco office on Friday afternoon and fortunately the only casualties were a few dozen boxes of pizza.
The teams presented their projects to the office; each team hoping to take out highly-coveted prizes including the Judge’s Award, People’s Choice Award and the not-so-sought-after Heroic Failure Award.
It was a tough call for the judging panel, who deliberated with careful consideration, but there could one be one winner for each category.
The winners are…
People’s Choice Award
Attendees at the presentation were asked to vote by secret ballot on their favorite project. The award went to Team Time Bandits, who developed a feature for Xero’s payroll app, Xero Me. Their project automatically created draft timesheets based on when an employee went in and out of the proximity of a Xero-branded beacon, all that’s left is for the user to review and submit.
This award went to the team judged to have achieved the highest level of learning, collaboration and fun. Judging criteria also included how complete the project was and the value of the proposed project to the business. The Judge’s Award went to crowd favorite, Team Time Bandits.
At Xero we love to celebrate our wins. That said, there’s nothing wrong with pointing out when things don’t quite go to plan. The Heroic Failure Award generally goes to the team that had a total bust, but this year our judges appropriately repositioned the award as “heroic opportunity” seeing as though the winner still had a working prototype. The winner was Team Archangel, who set out to create a rule-based program that lists payroll-related tasks for the first-time business owner, giving them an idea of what tasks they need to complete and when.
Team Time Bandits will go through to the global judging and be in the running to take out the honor of overall winner!
