In preparation for Xerocon, we decided to sit down with Dustin Wheeler, a Certified Xero Partner, to hear about his practice and his work with Xero users. Dustin has written software reviews for the CPA Practice Advisor and in 2011, 2012 and 2013 was included on their list of 40 Under 40 Tax and Accounting Profession Leaders.

Tell us about your practice and your clients

Hawkins is one of the largest public accounting firms in Utah with approximately 75 professionals and staff, including 12 partners. In addition to traditional tax and audit services, the firm offers retirement plan services, outsourced accounting, and payroll.

Some of the firm’s specialty services include research & development tax credits, medical & dental practice consulting, and state & local tax and international filings. My particular niche is helping business owners adopt new processes and technologies to have a more efficient accounting system.

How long have you been using Xero?

I was introduced to Xero in 2010 by a group of forward-thinking CPAs, I met at national accounting conferences and connected with on social media. After a few months of experimenting with it, I became a certified partner and since then have accumulated several clients who love its beautiful interface and unique features.

What do you think are your (or your clients’) biggest pain points in processing sales tax returns?

Each taxing jurisdiction has different due dates for their sales tax returns, making it difficult to manage all of the deadlines. Some business grow so fast that their accounting systems aren’t sophisticated enough to track their sales in each state, city or county. Also, it’s a daunting task to keep up with each state’s law changes for what items are taxable and at what tax rates.

Hawkins has several clients with sales tax filing requirements in multiple states, each using different accounting software and ecommerce platforms. Avalara TrustFile has the integrations built to help us support those clients and is a great tool to quickly and efficiently file sales tax returns.

What are some of your favorite Xero add-ons?

Some of my favorite Xero add-ons are:

  • Bill.com for improving the accounts payable process and enforcing internal controls
  • Hubdoc for gathering statements, invoices and receipts all in one place
  • Square for point-of-sale and processing payments. I’ve helped several clients integrate it seamlessly with Xero.

Dustin’s comments got us thinking about why we Avalarians are excited to come to Xerocon. Avalara’s experience with the Xero API has been incredibly helpful to us, as we innovate our tax solutions for accountants and their clients. And since cloud accounting is still such a new phenomenon, we have a lot to learn from this exciting group of early adopters at Xerocon. For Avalara, it’s an opportunity to demonstrate our TrustFile integration with Xero and get an exciting dose of real-world feedback from some of the smartest minds in this emerging industry. Come visit Avalara’s booth at Xerocon – it’s bright orange: you cannot miss it!

Also, big thanks to Dustin for sitting down to speak with us. If you are in need of accounting support, feel free to reach out to Dustin. Hablas español? Having lived in Mexico and traveled throughout Central and South America, Dustin speaks, reads, and writes Spanish proficiently.
