Whether relatively new to the accounting or bookkeeping profession or more well-established, it’s important to keep up-to-date with industry best practices and technology.

Claire Auslen, is just one of the hundreds of Xero partners who has penned cloud accounting conference, Xerocon, in her diary this year.

Auslen is the owner of accounting and business consulting firm Claire Up Your Books and, in her spare time, a knitter extraordinaire.

She recently invited Xero to sit down with her at her new office in Mill Valley, about 30 minutes north of San Francisco.

Auslen has been in the industry for more than 30 years and has some valuable insights into what has changed since she started. She also shared what she’s most excited for at Xerocon San Francisco.

Auslen has seen a lot change since she started, especially when it comes to accounting and bookkeeping software. In the grand scheme of things, Auslen is relatively new to using cloud-based accounting software.

Today, Auslen is a Xero Bronze Partner. She recalls how far technology has come in the past 30 years.

“When I started nobody got financial statements because it took four hours to produce them,” Auslen says.

When Auslen was looking to move some of her clients to the cloud, she tried to use other software; but found Xero easiest to use. She says when she gets a request through any other software, she turns it down.

One of the reasons she likes to have her clients on Xero is the ease of use. She says it’s simple for her clients who have had no experience doing their own accounting or bookkeeping to learn. And, when they need a helping hand, Auslen says Xero makes it easy to collaborate with her clients remotely.

“I can either remote in and we can work on the same file at the same time, or I can do what they’re doing and tell them what to do,” Auslen says. “I can look at their screen or look at their file in Xero and walk them through and either one works.”

Auslen is looking forward to the practical learning opportunities on offer at Xerocon, as well as earning CPE credits.

“I’m also looking forward to meeting the people that have apps that integrate with Xero,” Auslen says. There will be nearly 40 of Xero’s 500 integrations exhibiting in San Francisco next month.
