Xero’s mobile users are early birds. Take a look at the usage of bank reconciliation on mobile, averaged over the last month:
These folk are waking up starting at around a quarter to six! Peak reconciliation, at three times the average, is at 7:15am. By nine most people have moved on with their day. This is something we’ve known for a while, but it’s interesting to see just how big the spike is. It also raises a user experience issue.
Most of us are creatures of habit, getting up at the same time each day and performing the same activities. Unfortunately, your bank feeds might not be. If you take a look at some of our partner banks on Help, you’ll see that different banks provide their feeds at different times. Processing times can vary, and if the feed file has a problem and we need to fix it up first, it can take longer than expected to come through. We’re always working to improve this process, but one obvious thing to change was how you find out your feed is available.
Never check again
Up until now you’ve had to log in and check repeatedly until the transactions are there. Starting with the latest iOS release, we’ll tell you when you have new transactions for an account! To turn notifications on, just go into the account in the mobile app. If there are no unreconciled transactions, you’ll see the following:
Registering for iPhone notifications is as easy as tapping ‘Tell me about new transactions’. Then when your next feed arrives for that account, you’ll get a notification like this:
Tapping on that notification will take you straight to the account. You can then immediately review and reconcile the new statement lines!
This is the first of many iPhone notifications we expect to add to the app, but as it’s the first, we’re going to wait and see how it’s used. We’re cautious about adding too many notifications given how many you probably already get. We’re also adding one more thing for those with an Apple Watch…but more on that once it’s closer to release.
