Heads up – a new Xero header

Posted 9 years ago in Advisors by

An eagle-eyed tweeter spotted this last week.

Tweet about the Xero header

Oh, the intrigue! Well, I’m pleased to be able to confirm we’re changing the look of the header in Xero – in fact, this will become the standard for Xero including the Practice Studio suite of MyXero, Workpapers and Practice Manager for accountants.

As well as providing a more consistent look and feel across all of Xero’s applications, this change will also make it easier for us to deliver new shared features. A good example of this is the ability to search for an organisation – see below.

The change will be rolled out next Monday and since a few things have moved around a bit, I thought I’d let you know what to expect ahead of time.

Where’s the logout link?

Access to the logout link and to your user profile can be found by clicking on your name at the top right of the screen.

How do I get to My Xero?

All navigation between recently visited organisations and away from Xero is now actioned from the top left list icon. For most of you, who don’t have access to Practice Studio applications it will look like this:

My Xero

If you’re an accountant you have access to Practice Studio and My Xero is located with these applications. All applications available for your country are listed even if you don’t use them.

My Xero list of organisations

Quickly search for organizations

If you have access to more than five organizations you’ll be able to search for organisations by name – no need to navigate back to My Xero. Much quicker.

My Xero drop-down

How do I get to my Files library

Finally, you may have noticed in the screenshots above that there’s a new icon in the header for Files. Rather than accessing the Files library from the Settings menu, simply click the file icon next to the notifications icon.

So there you have it – a heads up on changes to the Xero header.

We also have a couple of other small updates in the release, these include:

  • Attaching files to purchase orders

  • Remove your own access to an organization

  • Update to Organization Settings to store your NZBN number (NZ only)

For more details, check out our full release notes after the release.

I find it interesting that Xero has steadfastly maintained that saving the email address on the login form (or even the “timed out” form) is a security risk, then go an make the log out button difficult to find/access.

My email address is public knowledge. Anyone who knows myself and my business name can access or guess it. Most times when I access it it’s from a computer with that email address set up in the email client, and with a pile of business cards sitting beside it. Suffice to say, remembering my email address (perhaps with a checkbox to do so, like most Microsoft online services) isn’t a security risk.

Hiding the log out button will almost definitely increase the numbers of people just closing the window rather than logging out. Surely this is a significantly higher risk than the above?

SOooooooooooooo can’t wait for this update – one tab in browser for Practice Studio – love it.

Oh … @Ian … us Xeroites love Xero so much we don’t log out, secretly we sleep with our iPads

January 23, 2014 at 10.34 am

I use the greasemonkey autocomplete script so I don’t need to store my xero credentials in a browser, but still have it remember my login. The current approach decreases security in my opinion.

Great! Can’t wait for the new WFM with TAX!

Great improvement. Can’t wait. But I can’t wait to hear that xero is rolling out their own advance inventory module like many of its competitor. Great job Xero team.

Looks good guys! I love not having to go back to MY Xero to switch to orgs other than the last five. Files NOT being under settings also makes a lot more sense! More of these improvements please!
Also @Ian and everyone else who doesn’t seem to know this, you CAN in fact get Xero to save your username. Simply bookmark this link; https://login.xero.com/?username=REPLACE_WITH_YOUR_USERNAME where the caps is your email address!
Another tip from Eye on Books! 🙂

Great……..but when will you be rolling out the new inventory management system which will actually be a useful to allot of small businesses? It keeps getting put on the back-burner it seems.

What Ian said! Autocomplete email seems to be a no-brainer. 1Password solves this for me but other users in our organisation find it a tad annoying.

While we’re at it can we get the auto-logout timeout to be customisable, maybe with a dropdown in settings to choose a couple of longer periods e.g. 60, 120 mins etc.

January 23, 2014 at 4.27 pm

Truly earth shattering stuff.

How can your development team delaypractical improvements, like automatically recurring journals, in favour of this?

All looking great. Practice Studio on the navigation!

Awesome! And next up… support for Bitcoin and other cryptos!!

January 23, 2014 at 11.34 pm

Have to agree with Ian – no logout button would seem to reduce security. Otherwise bring on them refinements. MYOB seems like a bad dream nowadays…

January 23, 2014 at 11.42 pm

@Ian, if you want to auto fill your login details and also keep them encrypted and secure, you should try using KeePass with the firefox/chrome plugin. It’s free and open source software that can generate and store all your logins and works just fine to log in to xero.

Back on topic…I’m very happy to see files getting it’s own icon! I think it’s a great feature and having it one click away is a good change.

That is helpful Charles. I managed to get Internet Explorer to save my log-in details a while ago but now with this I will be able to use other browsers.

I’m not sure that “hiding” the logout button is an improvement, I’m sure that will produce a fair bit of frustration for a while.

January 24, 2014 at 9.34 am

Thanks @Charles, that’s a great suggestion. And thanks Xero team for all the strong updates. You guys and gals are rock stars.

If you are releasing updates before Xerocon, I can’t wait to see what you held back for release then ;-). By the way, Files is Awesome!!!

January 24, 2014 at 3.37 pm

It would be good if we could force the user to add file attachments to certain expenses eg. New Capital, Repairs & Maintenance, Donations. The setting for this could be in the chart of accounts edit account. Please vote https://community.xero.com/business/discussion/3936213/

At the moment in Xero, can only go 2 decimal points .12 or .67 (won’t accept .128 or .1287 in the unit price column). Need to change this to accept up to 4 decimal points. AND why does one need to double click within the various column’s…… single click should be the go.
Hope you can fix that in your downtime. OR is Xero going to be like MYOB and ignore emails and ignore there clients – that’s one reason why MYOB was / is on the nose.

ALSO within column, Account – needs some serious revision, the delivery selection is so far down the list. Use this often and it’s way down there…. Most of the items within that column will never be used. Who can help out here……

January 25, 2014 at 12.56 am

Couldn’t figure out why I liked the look of this header, then it click… No overbearing and completely unnecessary Xero logo. Good work.

January 27, 2014 at 3.52 pm

@IAN, I agree a tick box to remember email for log-in would be good. But my wife does the data entry and I do quotes & Invoices. So this means at least we don’t log on with the wrong user. When we don’t share a PC, I use Lastpass. works with most browsers with plugins and auto fill both user AND password. AND ITS FREE. Keep all your passwords C/Card and Form fill if you want too. I agree LOG OFF button needs to stay.

January 27, 2014 at 4.53 pm

Hi, I am a little confused by the remember email to log in. I have bookmarked by log in page and all I have to do is type in my password. Xero has this quick log in on their business help centre. I have pasted the info below. Unless I am misconstrued what you are talking about
Quick Xero login: To speed up logging into Xero by only having to enter a password, replace the upper case characters with your Xero login address, then save as a browser or desktop bookmark.

January 27, 2014 at 11.43 pm

I can’t understand how these actually make any changes to my use of Xero. The main issue for me is that multiple users access Xero in my organisation and I do not have sufficiently granular control over their access to data in the system. Which means I am doing way more mundane accounting than I would like to. Looking forward to this being rolled out as soon as possible.

Nice UI Update! But, when are you going to finish the authorize.net intergration. Its been some time now.

A great upgrade for UI / UX junkies! Love the direct link to our WorkFlowMax account as well. Great work Xero team!

January 28, 2014 at 7.58 am

What happened to the “Ask my advisor” link in the help section?

January 28, 2014 at 12.07 pm

Nice work guys – keep it up.

“You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time”

January 28, 2014 at 11.51 pm

This is good. Two suggestions please!

1. When I email in a file can a little red 1 (or the number of uploaded files) be attached to the new files icon, as opposed to the message icon? That would negate the need to send me an email too.

2. Now the files are no longer in the settings menu please can the files inbox be a granularity setting within user permissions.

January 29, 2014 at 8.58 am

“Logout” menu option? It should be “Log out”.
Just like the “Login” button should say “Log in”. You’ve got “Sign up” as the link on your main page … “Log in” is no different to that. A “login” is a noun, “log in” is the verb form.

Yup, some more useful actual real accounting and sales features made to actually work – like making a customer be a customer before they actually pay you – as many do by surprise would seem more important to many users including myself. Also making sure Paypal customers get their full address & contact details brought across into xero would also limit users like me swearing at xero.com.

January 29, 2014 at 5.13 pm

Agree. Don’t why Xero can’t get with the (login) programme. Is there an ex Banker in the security team? Having to re-enter credentials at login every time is very very tiresome.

January 29, 2014 at 7.37 pm

I’m incurring a slight design inconvenience from this update:

– when I change the browser windows/tab and go back to the Xero window/tab the active point moves away from the field I was originally within and highlights the new “My Xero” header. This only seems to be happening the the Payroll fields.

I hope that makes sense…

January 29, 2014 at 11.53 pm

We’re more concerned about functionality than cosmetic changes like this.
EU VAT still isn’t dealt with in full by Xero. 🙁

It just keeps on getting better

@Nick – I can’t seem to reproduce this so I may be misunderstanding what you mean. The focus will remain in the field of a tab, even if you navigate away to another tab and back. If, however, the page you’re on refreshes in some way, the focus can move to another field – typically the first on on the page. Am I missing something?

As usual it’s frickin awesome and your SME’s who fancy themselves as Bookkeepers because they have had the best training from (well) us move fast with changes so keep em coming – the laugh and a half is I keep going to the right as a default but that’s because Women are always Right!
