Getting on board with the Small Business Web

the small business webI’ve recently joined the Small Business Web board and am thrilled to help this organization continue its journey towards creating better, more integrated web of business applications.

The Small Business Web is a trade association that believes in world where software works to help small businesses around the world be more efficient and productive. It is made up of nearly 200 companies who are pursuing a vision where anyone, without restriction, can build, sell and use software using infrastructure common by all.

The Small Business Web manifesto

  • We think small businesses are the lifeblood of the economy and that it’s from small business that true innovation will arise

  • We believe small businesses should have access to the same tools and technology that big companies have without paying a huge amount

  • We know simplifying access and increasing integration to our products and services will benefit all our customers

  • We want small business to succeed and we want to help

The principles of the small business web are very aligned to how we think about the web and business applications at Xero. Our add-on partner program is a perfect example of being open and having an application that is easy for anyone to connect to.

Small business are a huge online market

Small businesses across the world represent a huge market online. And the web has democratized the development and delivery of software to these small businesses globally. With an open web philosophy, smaller app developers can reach this market more easily. In some cases, enterprise-grade software is available at a fraction of the enterprise price. Small businesses are becoming more and more sophisticated and many are looking for online productivity tools that were previously only accessible by these big enterprises.

The small business landscape is a fragmented market made up of companies with unique needs. It is not always a one-size fits all approach for them so having the flexibility to bundle together multiple web apps that all work together seamlessly is great for them. Winners will likely be niche-market players developing tools for specific markets with open concept and API for ease of interoperability with other apps.

It’s an exciting time for both small business and the business app developers. We are seeing more and more investment into this space and expect that investment to continue. Working together we can make small businesses better off everywhere.
