New Xero Touch for iOS out today

Posted 5 years ago in Tech by Matt Vickers

We are delighted to announce that the new version of Xero Touch for iOS is available today for download from the iTunes App Store. It’s a total rebuild of the application from the ground up, using the iOS SDK and taking full advantage of Apple hardware to boost performance and responsiveness.

We’ve made some tweaks to the design to look more at home on iOS7 devices, and we have completely redesigned bank reconciliation to help you get through your bank reconciliation faster. Bank rec in bed is now a reality.

With this full rebuild complete we’re now in a good position to deliver more frequent releases and drive further mobile accounting innovation. Let us know what you think in the comments.

New version of Xero Touch for Android coming soon

A native rebuild of Xero Touch for Android is well underway with our recently formed Android development team. We’ll bring you further updates when we have them.

Awesome update. It’s so fast!

It would be helpful to understand the reasons for going native. I remember well when the apps first came out how proud Xero were of using web tech over native. What was it that made you switch? Did it let you down or did you just want something more?

Awww yeah. Nice work team!

October 16, 2013 at 11.19 am

The movie is brilliant!

Looks slick. I’ve had a quick look the new one and I am also new to Xero.

Can the iPhone app use the same transaction rules as the web app? I couldn’t see so but that would really speed things up.

Hi @Joe – the iPhone app will give you suggestions or matches based on rules you’ve set up with the web client.

Cool video, will spread the word of the app update with clients!

How about a version for Windows Phone?

October 16, 2013 at 5.11 pm

Looks great. Just wondering if there are plans to be able to input PURCHASES on the go, expenses don’t appear to be much use to me as a sole trader, unless there is an easy process for turning expenses to purchases that I’m missing.

Hi @Carolyn – we’re looking at that as a possibility for a future release.

Hi @Chris – no plans for a Windows Phone version at present, but we are continuing to monitor Windows Phone usage.

Awesome update!

Thanks for pushing for innovation!

When will we be able to track purchases from mobile and ‘spend money?’ One of our biggest challenges is not being able to record corp. expenses with the reciept like you can with personal exp.

I might be blind but how do you record a payment for an invoice using the app? I can send & see existing invoices but how to I add a payment? Very important on the road as you receive cash or cheque payments.

I agree! Looks great and really fast. And I would also love to be able to take a picture of a receipt and have it show as a purchase. My clients would love this!

Hi @Caleb, @David, @Sarah – thanks for the input. You can currently raise a purchase as an expense claim but not yet as a direct business purchase – we’ll look at doing this at some point in future – there’s a lot of features we’d like to add!

Great look and really getting there but seriously lacking without Purchases and Basic Reports

October 16, 2013 at 6.58 pm

what would be interesting are the reports.

October 16, 2013 at 7.11 pm

How about adding the creditors to the dashboard? Seeing money due in is only half the story. We need to be able to check on creditors too.

Nice work @Xero – I was always a little reluctant to dwell too much on the benefits of touch but the native app will allow you to develop the functionality much faster including attending to some of the ikportant issue raised above. enjoyed my Auto-enabled ios7 update too!

Thanks everyone for your ideas – frankly we’re busy celebrating getting this first release out after a huge effort over the past few months. We’re well aware there’s plenty more to do. Just a reminder that if you do have ideas – a great place to share ideas (and vote on them!) is in our Xero Community.

I can see the transaction rules show up now. Cheers Matt.

This app is awesome – well done on all the hard work, and getting the extra investment.

October 16, 2013 at 8.46 pm

People, your iPhone has a browser. Use that for features that don’t yet exist in the app. Like reports

October 16, 2013 at 9.04 pm

Awesome as always! Many thanks 🙂

+1 for native Windows Phone support please.

All this is lovely I’m sure. Now what about some really basic improvements and adding a damn purchase order module?

This is so frustratingly slow in coming and almost drives me back to MYOB.

October 16, 2013 at 10.54 pm

Thanks. App is awesome. So is Charles Green. Give that dude the $150 mill.

Relieved Android is being respected. Had my iphones for 3 years. Then jumped to Android so now enjoying benefits light years ahead. I won’t be going back to iphone. Bring on those Android apps.

October 17, 2013 at 8.22 am

Great job with the iOS release! Looking forward to the new Android app!

Hi @Caleb – if you’d genuinely like to see this feature, I would encourage you to vote for it as a feature request in our community as that’s what actively feeds into our roadmap. If we do support it in future it’ll be as a result of votes within the Xero community as we can verify that our customers have genuinely asked for it, rather than acceding an external petition where we cannot do that verification.

Another vote for a Windows Phone please. Also a heads up on Win Phone market share trending to, with luck, motivate your team… Please have a chat about the Win Phone numbers below with the leadership team there at Xero.

Market Share figures for Win Phone….
Great Britain 12%
Germany 10.8%
Vietnam 15%
In ANZ it’s lower but raising fast, up from 2.6% in Q1 2013 to 6% 3 months later in Q2

Windows Phone nears double digit share across Europe

Can you then talk about a Windows 8 app as well?…..

October 18, 2013 at 1.09 am

Do you need to be connected to the Internet when you are adding in expense receipts? A lot of my business travel and expenses are when I’m on the road, over seas. You can not be connected to the Internet when out on the road while OS.

Usual bollocks. Let’s spend our time developing OS apps because somebody somewhere said the IPAD is the most important thing since sliced bread whereas the 80% of the smartphone market who use android on a variety of devices and tablets are left waiting whilst your newly formed android team start work.

How are you going with accessing and entering purchases on the go using the app?

Hi @Paul – no news at present but it is being looked at.

February 14, 2014 at 11.12 pm

Software looks great for what I need but with no Windows Phone support I’m left in the dust…

February 16, 2014 at 12.40 pm

Yes Windows 8 application please…..

March 7, 2014 at 10.05 am

I would also like to see windows 8 app

I was with a client today and I had installed Xero Touch on to all his devices; Mac, iPad and iPhone. He thought it would be handy to be able to add a new Contact on the go but when we tried the app it doesn’t allow you to add contacts. Or did I miss a step? He had a point though because people always have their phones on them and its just an easy process. Could you please include this in the next upgrade and maybe allow a photo to be taken of the contact or their business card. Thanks

Matt Vickers in reply to Marisa Toto

HI @Marisa, you haven’t missed anything. Being able to update contacts is a feature that we are planning to support as soon as we can. In the meantime, your client could use the latest version of Xero Touch for iOS, released today, to snap a photo of a business card and send it direct to their Xero Files inbox for later processing. There’s certainly more that we could do here, but this might help for now.
