Help us decide

The Xero Mobile team is just working on adding bank transactions to Xero Touch. We’re having a heated discussion internally on whether the default list of transactions should be ‘Unreconciled’ (currently on the left on the screen shot below) or ‘All transactions’.

We’d appreciate it if you could help decide by letting us know what option you’d prefer and why?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

I’m going to go with All transactions.

My vote is for unreconciled. You go to the app to get upto date or to do something.

Did you consider the logic “if there are unreconciled transactions, show that tab, else show the All Transactions tab”? I presume you did – what was the reasoning behind not doing it that way?

Also – does/will the app have the ability to reconcile transactions? If not, I’d lean towards showing All Transactions by default – I just have a hunch that showing people a tab with notifications, that they can’t do anything about, by default, might lead to feelings of frustration. That’s only a hunch though.

I’d go with Unreconciled, since this will be the shorter list, and you will have already looked at the reconciled ones.

As long as you can actually reconcile them, then absolutely the unreconciled view. The beauty of xero on your smart phone is to be able to get work done in spare time on the train etc.

Unreconciled if there are any and all if not for
Me too. Basically you don’t have all transactions if you have some that aren’t yet reconciled.

A little biased here but if there are unreconciled items, default to unreconciled.

Nigel’s points are good. I initially thought “unreconciled”, because that’s what you need to be aware of- but if you can’t do anything about their unreconciledness in the app, it’ll breed frustration.

+1 to Nigel’s comments. (And cj’s reasoning.)

Matts on the road this weekend, so answering on his behalf.

@Nigel We’ll get the read only bank transactions out first then add the ability to reconcile soon after. There’s quite a bit of logic to write for the reconcile as we have to consider bank rules, memorization etc etc but we’re really keen to get to this asap.

Our feeling is the read only view will be useful immediately as you can check if you got paid overnight and/or have some entries to process in Xero.

We really appreciate the thoughtful comments, keep them coming.

Hi team,

I would suggest “unreconcile” as default, first thing you want to do when you log in is check what’s new.
If there is no new transactions then can you just show “all transactions” or a simple message on the screen “no new transactions”.

Unreconciled, because then I can reconcile them!

Unreconciled. Don’t imagine using the app (as a primary method) of fixing anything re reconciled trans.

Unreconciled – would be great to have a quick way of dealing with them and see how much needs to be done

@cj_nz

If you can’t reconcile then my view does swing back a bit the other way.

However, unreconciled will be in most situations the most recent transactions anyway.

I can see it is different strokes for different strokes. I reconcile the easy transactions (previous days sales and marched transactions) first thing in the morning for my brothers business. If the app was to default to unreconciled, by the time he gets his arse out of bed he wont see most of the previous days banking. That would be why he looks wheras I would only look to get stuff done.

Therefore – could you change the default in a settings tab?

Unreconciled if any exist otherwise all transactions. I intend to use the new app to reconcile all new stuff way way more than I would to review other transactions.

Unreconciled :)

Haha. We’re having the exact same discussion at BigCommerce at the moment, with regards to “pending” and “completed” orders.

We’re tending towards “pending” in our case, as we’ve been collecting data that shows the most common action on that screen is to move pending orders to “shipped” or “completed”. This way, the new/unresolved orders are treated as outstanding action items, and display by default, rather than the list of all orders.

If the Xero app is read-only, this same pattern may still make sense, but it makes a lot more sense when reconciling a transaction is the a primary call to action for that view.

Please let it be all transactions as if the tick shows reconciled will mean easy to see activity because the mobile version is so accessible. That way for management may be only view required!

if the target market is the business owner – ‘all transactions’, if the bookkeeper – ‘unreconciled’… if both maybe an option in the app to nominate which view (what’s a bit more code a tokes!) yikes, treading on thin ice?

@Rod: good points, approve of shipping early and often of course :)

New suggestion… default to the one they were looking at last? Doesn’t help the first case, but it might help for all future interactions?

Unreconciled first. I’d guess that most people logging in via mobile would look to see recent changes and the unreconciled list will include those,

Make it a user setting, but default it to unreconciled. Let the help line and FAQ easy to follow for those who want All.

Left or right.
I would have all transactions on the left and if i had to have a tab for unreconciled it would be on the right. I would prefer all to come up, but the function question is valid, and so should be able to set as a option, all/reconciled, left/right in settings.
I would prefer a filter option that can be set and changed and remembered – all deposits, all payments (type with selectable check boxes), for a period(today, last week, last month, all), status (all, reconciled, unreconciled). Probably a bit much for a mobile device, but dreams are free.

So whens the Android version of this App ready to download?

Melissa
April 4, 2012 at 5:15 pm

Makes no difference either way. If you can’t reconcile them from the device, why have it as default? If you can, then awesome. As the bookkeeper, I always go to unreconciled first to get everything up to date, however, the business owner might be different…?

I still say unreconciled.

My vote is for unreconciled. Keep it the same as the web version :)

Hugely excited this feature has made it to the top of the list. Probably most useful to quickly check if an invoice has been paid, so unreconciled makes sense.

PeterLondon

Unreconciled for sure – as that is the same as the web version. Most of the time you want to see “new” (unreconciled) bank entries.

@Mark – that’s been covered at length elsewhere on this blog (see the post and comments here for our current status on Android http://blog.xero.com/2011/11/xero-touch-news-and-ios-5-release/), but the short answer is that there is no ETA yet but that it is actively being worked on.

Unreconciled. I would also like to be able to reconcile using mobile xero. It would be good to have the option to change the view to all transactions as well though I believe unreconciled should apear first.
