From the UK to Middle Earth – life’s good
We have a truly multinational team here at Xero and, as you can see from the picture, we have quite a few from the ‘home isles’. Having so many international visitors to the country at the moment (there’s a sport competition going on or something) has got me looking back and thinking about how I came to be where I am.
Let me share a secret with you: I never thought I’d end up in New Zealand, and before I visited I thought it was going to be a boring, mostly rural place. Yet somehow I’m coming up to the end of my 5th year as a resident here. Crazy!
The decision to move here was somewhat of a whimsical moment, and I won’t bore you with the details, but after living in London for four years (I’d also said I’d never live in London as a youth so I’m the king of contradiction) and meeting so many Kiwis who moaned about London compared to home, I decided to check out this mythical dream country.
Prior to emigrating to the other side of the world I’d had jobs and lived in various places around the UK but NONE have been quite like the adventure of living and working in Middle Earth.
There are so many great things about living here it’s hard to put in words. But here’s some of the top reasons I stay:
- The cutting edge: There’s so many great things going on, especially in Wellington – home of Xero HQ – that you really feel like anything’s possible. Despite (or perhaps because of) the country’s remoteness, there are a ton of great technology ideas and startups percolating.
- People: I’ve made so many firm friends and colleagues that I feel truly at home in my adopted country, it’s easy to get to know people and I’ve quickly made contacts within a really diverse group of individuals
- Life: For a long time in my prior life I struggled with work-life balance, nowadays I get to give my 2 year old a bath and bedtime story and work around my family commitments
- Fun: There really is so much to do in this country it’s crazy. I’m an avid skier and sailer and can do both of those without travelling too far. You can be as adventurous as you like and still enjoy a whole plethora of entertainment options.
I would wholeheartedly recommend moving to New Zealand. There’s a whole bunch of us at Xero HQ who have. Why not take the chance to live the way you want to live and still work in a cutting edge and enjoyable company? If you’ve got the talent Xero can help you get here.
I’ll always be Owen from Wales but I’m also a proud Xero/Kiwi.
