Xero Touch – accounting app for mobile

Xero Touch, our mobile app, is now available for free in the App Store.

This is the same accounting app for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch that’s also available when you login at m.xero.com. However, there are a few big advantages that come with installing the official iPhone version:

  • Take photos of receipts and attach them directly to your expenses
  • Use a 4 digit passcode to login quickly
  • It runs faster, because the app is stored on your phone

We put together a fun video to illustrate some of the useful features of the app…

A lot of thought went into the design of our iPhone accounting app, focusing on ways to streamline the mobile experience: Quickly check your balances, quickly draft invoices with a few taps – even approve & send invoices straight from your phone, add expenses just by taking a photo of a receipt, tap to call customers & quickly add contact notes.

We think you’ll find it’s very smooth & snappy.

We also made the accounting app available on the iPad so you can get the same streamlined experience on the bigger screen. As always, you can still use the full version of Xero from your iPad (which we plan to make a bit more touch friendly).

Even though Xero Touch is available in the App Store, under the hood it’s running our standard HTML5 mobile web app. A big advantage of being a web app is that the data on your phone and the data in your accounting system are always in sync.

It was a slight ordeal getting the app thru Apple’s notorious approval process, but that’s a story for another day. With the iPhone version now approved our team is working hard on getting a version into the Google Android app store.

Let us know how Xero Touch is changing the way you do business. And be sure to leave a recommendation on the App Store. As always, let us know what other features you think would be useful.

@Simon we’re in testing so not far away. I’ve seen it and it looks great. In the initial versions of Android the performance was awful so we parked it. Even now testing is bear because of all the different versions. Team has been working hard.

Hi, I’m trying to use m.xero.com on my Galaxy S3 and I was reall struggling to work out how to actually add a claim or invoice.
Now after looking at the pictures at the top of this post I can see I’m not getting the blue access bar at the bottom… I’ve tried downloading a new browser but same result. Help please?
Looking forward to the Android app…

Hi @Ben, you’re probably looking at our mobile site, which has been designed for feature phones. When you visit m.xero.com, there’s a link to ‘Login to Xero Touch’. If you tap that, it’ll take you through to login to Xero Touch.

I’ve asked one of our design team to take a look at this as it’s not as clear as it could be.

The app is pretty basic, let’s be honest, really needs proper offline solution and better info. Take a look at invoice2go app, which is quite a cool sales ledger app – that is the kind of thing clients love, shame it only syncs with quickbooks. Can’t Xero just buy out invoice2go?

The iPhone / iPad app doesn’t seem to work with a Xero Personal account. Will I be able to use the app with a Personal account at some stage?

Ralph, you’re right the Xero Touch app is for business accounts only. But stay tuned for an app to do your personal accounts.

Any idea on when Windows Phone App will be created? as the fastest growing phone in the market and the most secure enterprise device, I am surprised this has not been created yet.

Second the request for a Windows Phone app. The design philosophy ought to be right up Xero’s alley.

Hi @David and @Chris – absolutely acknowledge that we have customers using Windows Phone devices and wanting to use Xero on them – but right now the stats we’re seeing don’t justify diverting our resources from improving and extending the iOS and Android apps, which are by far the handsets that the vast majority of our users have. Mobile’s a fast moving space and things can change in a heartbeat – so we’re not ruling out Windows Phone at all. But we’ll be focussing on iOS and Android in the short-to-mid term.

Hi there. My 4 digit PIN number for xero touch has died on ipad. Can you please explain how to reset it? Maybe it’s blindingly obvious, but I seem to be blind. Cheers, Richard.

Hi – loving the new upgrade. Is it possible to enter “Bills” in Xero Touch? I use the invoice function but would like to enter invoices from suppliers also. Thanks. Jo

Hi. Agree with a couple of the comments about adding “Bills” to in the app, a feature that appears to be missing, and would be useful.

Hi @Kevin – we’re looking at including Bills in a future release. Also, with the next iOS release you will be able to upload any document you like into your Files Inbox to attach to anything you like when you’re at your computer later. This is coming very soon.

Yes, please add Bills / Accounts Payable receipts to the app ASAP! This would be most useful vs keeping envelops full of paper receipts. thank you

Hi

One of our clients is having problems using the Xero Touch Ap – he used to be able to add images via the paperclip now the ‘take photo’ option is no longer there.

Can you help troubleshoot why this may be happening? Regards, Lisa

There doesn’t seem to be a way to submit all receipt drafts in one go. Annoyed our finance manager by submitting 12 receipts individually!

Any chance of introducing this feature?

I honestly have NO idea why we still are unable to create a new bill from Xero Touch. Why is this not a priority and WHY is xero dev team so slow. There’s free apps available with the ability to upload bills. Come on Xero.

How Xero tackles technical debt

Technical debt accrues for many reasons. Sometimes as developers, we are pushing to get features out of the door, and speed trumps elegance. Sometimes, technology moves on and choices which were good at the time just don’t age well. Other times we’re working with technology that is new to us and we’re not up-to-date with ...
