At the coal face
When I hung up my running shoes I never thought I would be hanging out with accountants and working with them to take an online accounting system to market. It has only been two and a half months into my first job in my life, but that is exactly what I have been doing.
It has been fantastic joining a team like Xero, where there is a real buzz in the air, a certain positive desperation to make it happen. It is a bit like being three years out from the Olympics. For Athens, I had a great team around me and we wanted to beat the whole planet at our game. We thought we could do it but were under no illusions how hard it would be, this is what drove us to succeed. An attitude to make it happen.
Xero is headquartered in Wellington so when I joined I had to get out and find us some office space in Auckland, where I’m based. Not just any office space. The building had to be worthy and reflect the mission we were taking on. Last month we moved into 20 Beaumont St, a superb space in a character building at the bottom of town. The best feature is a large training room perfectly laid out for guiding accountants through Xero.
As Xero’s Relationship Manager, my role is at the coal face, showing accountants through the power house that is Xero. Once again, hanging out with accountants is certainly a large jump from where I would normally be this time of year….in Europe getting in shape for the ITU World Cup Triathlon circuit. But even though I am facing my first winter in 14 years, I wouldn’t trade this for anything. I have found my next Olympics….game on!
