Enabling the trusted advisor

The Accountants’ Big Day Out in Auckland was the first event I’ve been to representing Xero. I found it even more interesting and valuable that I’d expected. It was great getting to talk to many of the 200 accountants that attended about Xero, and to listen to their views about the current state of accounting software and their desire to be the trusted advisor. There were some great quotes I took on board:

  • Only 3% of customers want more focus on compliance and tax returns
  • The largest areas of customer interest were business analysis and future planning
  • Many customers don’t have regular contact with their accountant and would like them to become more involved as a trusted advisor

We’ve had some excellent feedback from attendees including:

From Viv Brownrigg, Business Fitness NZ Ltd Chief Executive:

“We at Business Fitness NZ Ltd are strongly committed to providing the best tools available to help accountants help their clients grow and increase their profits – it’s great to see Xero working on the same principle with a concept that will take it one step further in making the accountant the virtual CFO.”

From David Steele, Business Fitness NZ Ltd Director:

“The Xero concept of a business community sharing ideas and information is exactly what we at Business Fitness NZ are doing with our accountant clients – it is this principle of sharing business ideas that will contribute to Xero’s success like it has to Business Fitness NZ.”

From Preston Epplett at Preston Epplett & Co Ltd, Hastings:

“For me the highlight of the Accountants’ Big Day Out was the presentation by Rod Drury of the Xero software. This software is likely to revolutionise the way small to medium businesses operate their business in the future. I am certainly interested in looking further at this software and working with the developers to enhance to the product. This is the way of the future. A feature of the software is the friendly input screens and ease of use.”

“The concept is certainly my vision of the future of accounting.”

Our plan is to build up the operational capability of Xero over the next few months. Over that time we’ll be doing a New Zealand road show – we’d love to catch up with accountants who attended the Big Day Out. Please contact us with your details at

I’d like to say a huge thank you to Viv, Dave and the team at Business Fitness for putting together such a valuable event.
