Whirlwind introduction

The past three and half weeks have been a whirlwind introduction to Xero and the Xero community for this recent recruit, and it leaves me well convinced I’m in the right place at the right time! My role as Senior Communications Manager means I am responsible for the blog site, sharemarket releases, investor relations, and working with local media and with our global subsidiaries.

Attending Xerocon Australia in July was the highlight of my first week. Meeting our fast growing Australian team and a dive into the deep end – helping with the live blogging while learning about Xero’s amazing services and cool partner relationships on the fly.

The second week enabled me to get across various parts of the organisation and experience the Annual Meeting. What an enthusiastic investor base, and some pretty exciting numbers were released, including over 100% growth reaching 100,000 paying customers. My job in respect to these announcements is to ensure that information material to the share price goes to the NZX first, which ensures a fair market.

The third week saw me really starting to focus on the blog and looking at how we can improve it over coming months (suggestions welcome), thinking about media opportunities, a thorough induction day with 24(!) other new employees, and getting up to speed with what we are doing in communications globally. We’ve got some great people working around the world in US, UK and Australia.

But that was not all, Xero supports the WDCNZ conference, which I was very keen to experience. We had learned so much doing the live blog at Xerocon Australia that we just had to do it again. This time we had four keen Xero developers blogging, a photographer, and me in the coordinating seat. It was a hit, with some bloggers even getting actual code samples into the blog stream!

And now week four, and the excitement continues. Building out plans for the next few months, while editing blog posts and assisting in an editing and writing capacity elsewhere where I can. A background in technology journalism before moving into communications around six years ago, is really coming in handy, as is having dabbled in my own businesses.

Xero is a very happening thing and the excitement and challenges won’t stop. I’m a true believer in learning by doing, so at this pace it looks like I’ll be a Xero mastermind in no time! I’d encourage anyone, especially software developers and designers, who is also looking for an exciting place to work, to give us serious consideration.
