Guess the Xero number

Since the beginning we’ve been dedicated to making your business run better than ever.

We love hearing how using Xero has helped give small business owners that much needed visibility of their numbers, making business more profitable or taking it to the next level, and giving back hours previously taken up with tedious manual data entry.

Xero is nearly five years old, and we’re about to release our annual results. There’s loads of “compliance requirements” in this, but we thought we could have some fun and work out how busy Xero customers have been.

Want to have a guess?

Win a Xero engraved iPad by guessing the total New Zealand Dollar value of transactions processed in Xero from day one. Is it $10 million, $100 million, $200 million or even more? The first person to guess the closest number wins. Pass this on and tell your friends.

Update: The #xeronumber competition closes in an hour at 8.30amNZT (20/5/2011 – time for you) when we expect our annual results to be released by the NZX (NZ Stock Exchange). Time for those last minute entries now!

You only mention business customers in your blog entry. Is this the total transactions of just business customers or business and personal?

Will you do your transaction currency conversion to NZD at the time of transaction or as of today? I note that Xero has customers in over 50 countries, and being multi-currency I guess there are transactions in far more currencies than that. I guess though that the two big currencies to consider are the UK pound and the Australian dollar and that the weakness of the UK pound is probably offset by the current strength of the Australian dollar.

And are you including non-cash transactions in your calculation? For example, a general ledger entry to recognise depreciation?

Hmmmm… Ok, only considering the business customers, I’ll try to guess some inputs to model this:

Current number of business customers: 60,000 ?! :-)
Avg months customers on Xero: 18
Avg customer monthly revenue: 10,000
Avg customer monthly expenses: 8,000

Total value of transactions: 19,440,000,000

It will be really interesting to know what those inputs actually are, but I think I’ve been reasonably conservative on average revenue per business especially translated in to NZD. So I’m guessing the xero number must be at least $19.4 billion!

If we assume there are 100,000 personal customers, with each customer having a combined income of $50,000 and spending most of that income each year, well that is another $10 billion of transactions! If I add that to my business customer estimate I get $29.4 billion. My only concern is that I’m being too conservative and I wouldn’t be surprised to find that the actual number has hit $100 billion.

Ok, I’ll add these together and take my punt: the xero number is $29,400,000,000.00
